Rejection: The word often brings back painful memories of being turned down by that special someone, or of receiving a polite letter following the interview saying “we’ll keep your resume on file.”
When you’re a heart-based entrepreneur, it’s tempting to fall into the trap of feeling rejected when a potential client turns you down, particularly if they’ve interviewed more than one coach.
It’s especially difficult when your business is relatively new. You may second guess yourself, wondering what you could have said or done differently.
Even if you tell yourself you know better, it can still be tough. If you’ve had this experience, or if you’ve ever had the experience of feeling rejected anywhere in your business or life, you truly can free yourself from having that awful feeling ever again.
How can I make such a bold claim? It’s simple. There really is no such thing as rejection. What most people call rejection is simply a case of another person having a different opinion.
It doesn’t say anything about you at all. It’s all about them, just as your opinion is all about you. People are all different, and thank goodness for that. How boring it would be if we all agreed on everything! It’s learning from our differences that spices up our lives and helps us grow.
You never know what someone else’s path is. It’s quite possible they were meant to have that one conversation with you, and no more. That could be the service they needed from you. Sometimes the right path becomes even more clear when the “wrong path” is explored.
The truth is, any potential client who says no to you, most likely wasn’t your ideal client in the first place. Your ideal client is someone who resonates with you, who gets you, and you get them. You can feel it, your intuition just clicks.
You can like someone, even want them as a client, but if you don’t feel that click, it’s not a match. Look at it this way; they are actually doing you both a favor. If they say yes when it’s not a fit, they probably won’t get the value you have to offer.
In the long run, neither one of you will be happy.
Now that doesn’t mean there isn’t an art to making sure your ideal clients recognize that you are the coach for them. You do need to learn how to present what you offer clearly and skillfully, that’s what marketing and the enrollment conversation is all about.
If you feel as though you aren’t able to present what you do so your prospects really get it, that’s a different challenge. You’ll definitely want to get some help with that. Learning how to do an effective Discovery Session that feels authentic and enroll clients is key to building a successful business.
If you think this might be your challenge, a “no thank you” still isn’t rejection. It’s simply feedback. They are telling you that you haven’t presented the value you offer in a way that helps them get it, that’s all. It says nothing about you personally.
So, freeing yourself from the feeling of rejection involves both shifting your mindset and possibly taking action. Here is a two-step process you can take whenever a potential client turns you down:
If the answer is yes, then it simply wasn’t a match. The prospect didn’t resonate with you and was not your ideal client. That’s ok, they are someone else’s ideal client, and you helped them get clarity around that. Now you have room for your next ideal client. Energetically wish them well and move on.

If the answer is no, and more than 30% of the prospects you speak with turn you down, consider getting help with your enrollment conversations. And remember, it’s feedback, not rejection!

Consider getting help with your branding and marketing strategy, and make sure you’re using the law of attraction to visualize and pull your ideal clients in energetically.
Successful coaches channel all their time and energy on attracting and serving their ideal clients. Keep your focus there, and you won’t have time to fall back into the “rejection” mindset. Your “tribe” is out there, just waiting for your special magic. Go get ‘em!
